How can we increase HCC screening in patients with liver cirrhosis?
The study evaluated the effectiveness of mailed outreach and patient navigation in improving hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) screening completion among patients with cirrhosis compared to usual care.
Conducted across three US health systems from 2018 to 2021, the study involved participants who received mailed invitations for ultrasound-based screening plus navigation or standard visit-based care.
Results showed a significant increase in screening completion with the intervention (6.6%) compared to usual care (3.3%). The intervention also improved screening rates across various demographic and clinical subgroups.
Despite these gains, overall screening rates remained suboptimal, underscoring the need for more robust strategies in clinical practice.
