Are patients with IBD are at higher risk for RSV?

This study investigated whether patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are more susceptible to severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections compared to those without IBD. Using data from the TriNetX research network, researchers compared the hospitalization risk between 794 patients with IBD who had RSV and 93,074 non-IBD patients with RSV, matched for demographic and RSV risk factors.

Key findings include:

  • Patients with IBD had a higher risk of hospitalization due to RSV (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.30) compared to non-IBD patients.
  • There was no significant difference in hospitalization-related complications between the two groups (aOR 0.83).
  • Recent use of systemic corticosteroids (<3 months) was linked to a higher risk of hospitalization in the IBD cohort (aOR 1.86).

The study concludes that adults with IBD are at increased risk of hospitalization from RSV and might benefit from the RSV vaccine recommended for those aged 60 and older.
